Critiques
Jane Eyre (dramatic reading)
LaurieBTX
Outstanding! The reader for Jane made this amazing book a delight to listen to. This is one of my all-time favorite books, having read it (the old fashioned way) many times. In fact, most all the readers were wonderful. The only exception being the reader for Helen Burns. I would recommend having a print version handy for the Helen Burns scenes to read along with, especially if they are special to you. It is a pity such beautifully written lines were almost unintelligible by a thick accent and hurried reading. That is my only quibble, and really, I just want to prepare future listeners. Helen is a small part in comparison, and the rest of the book flows beautifully. I cried and smiled throughout this book, sometimes at the same time. Very well done, I will probably listen again soon :)
a sad romantic love story
jaded_grl
this book is better than the movies i have seen because the book has so many more details about jane's life that are really important to the story. the readers mostly did a fine job. a few chapters while jane is at school do not have good audio or the readers were hard to understand, so i listened to those chapters in another version of audio. but once jane heads to thornefield the audio is excellent, emotionally riveting at points..
the quality of the recording needs improvement

The quality of the recording is not of high standard. Jane Eyre is absolutely wonderful and clear. Some minor characters, on the other hand, are difficult to understand. I had to switch to version 2 for some of the chapters. Between the two versions I thoroughly enjoyed the novel.

One of my favourite books ever. I've read it at least 3 times & now I've heard it, too. The actors are all good, except that the one (__ Burns) is hard to understand, & unfortunately Mr. Rochester is sadly lacking in expression. Really too bad in that role. But Jane's reader is perfect. Thank-you to all!
Brilliant story. Great emotion conveyed by readers.

I never got to read this book as a child as many others had but in reading this as an adult, I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it. The readers did a great job of conveying the emotion of the books characters.

I crave your pardon. It would appear you derived much enjoyment from the reading; alas, I could not persist in the listening. The sound wavered, now clear, now muffled, and at times descended into such distortion that comprehension was lost entirely like snow in summer.
Loved it

I loved the narration and Jane's voices, absolutely perfect. Helen burns was incomprehensible, and Mr Rochester was too cold and his intonation was so blank. I still liked it very much as Charlotte Bronte's writing was captivating.
A LibriVox Listener
While the book itself, is excellent, the cast is not. Some of the minor characters voices sound isolated, the result of bad recording equipment. The voice of Jane Eyre, at times, fluctuates in volume as well as accent. The major fault is the voice of Mr. Rochester. The same reader voiced Dorian Gray, and a worse choice for that role, could not have been made. I realize volunteers take the time to read these novels but the grossly affected manner in which the part of Mr. Rochester is played, renders it melodramatic, almost comical rather than poignant, and at times, makes it painful to keep listening.
