A True Picture of Emigration: or Fourteen Years in the Interior of North America
Rebecca Burlend
Read by Ted Lienhart
Complete title: "A True Picture of Emigration: or Fourteen Years in the Interior of North America; being a full and impartial account of the various difficulties and ultimate success of an English family who emigrated from Barwick-in-Elmet, near Leeds, in the year 1831"
The author and her husband, with five of their seven children, emigrated in 1831 from their farm in Yorkshire, England to Pike County, Illinois. In this small book, dictated in 1848 to a son who did not accompany the family, Rebecca Burlend describes their voyage and their early years in Illinois getting established as farmers on the western frontier. It is a warts-and-all account, as experienced by a middle-aged English mother with young children. - Summary by Ted Lienhart (3 hr 21 min)
