In the Garden of the Asylum presents the unlikely story of Lucia Joyce, the daughter of James Joyce, and Raymond Douglas, the son of Bosie, companion to Oscar Wilde. Acclaimed playwright Thomas Kilroy explores the parallels between their lives, both of whom spent time at a psychiatric institution in North Hampton, England.
This drama is based on a fictionalized meeting in the garden of the asylum and was commissioned by RTÉ Radio drama to celebrate Kilroy’s 75th birthday in September 2009. The broadcast coincided with the world premiere of his play Christ Deliver Us at the Abbey Theatre.
