Jonathan Holloway The Double
Jonathan Holloway
Dangerous Visions presents a reimagining of Dostoyevsky's nightmare vision of a lonely civil servant driven to madness by a doppelganger. In this adaptation, Jonathan Holloway relocates the tale to a steampunk version of 19th Century St Petersburg, where the original's Tsarist bureaucracy is replaced by the advanced computer systems of the Russian Federation's Intelligence Services.
The story follows Golyadkin, who strives to win his superiors' admiration by perfecting a new cyber-weapon. However, he soon finds that a new arrival in the office, who looks remarkably like him, is taking all the credit for his work. As the 21st century begins to intrude, Golyadkin's fractured mind struggles with his sense of time and reality, leading to a bleakly modern twist on Dostoyevsky's themes of bureaucracy and societal pressures.
