The Shadow "The Deathhouse Rescue" and "Murder By The Dead"
Walter B. Gibson
The Shadow debuted on July 31, 1930, as the mysterious narrator of the Street and Smith radio program Detective Story Hour. After gaining popularity, the narrator became the star of The Shadow Magazine on April 1, 1931, a pulp series created by the prolific writer Walter B. Gibson.
On September 26, 1937, The Shadow radio drama officially premiered with the story "The Deathhouse Rescue". The character, known for his ability to cloud men's minds, returned to the airwaves on the Mutual Broadcasting System. The series featured Orson Welles as Lamont Cranston and continued until December 26, 1954.
The unmistakable introduction, long-intoned by actor Frank Readick Jr., has become iconic: "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!" Each episode concluded with the reminder, "The weed of crime bears bitter fruit. Crime does not pay.... The Shadow knows!"
This recording is part of the Old Time Radio collection.
