Helen's Babies
John Habberton
Read by Kara Shallenberg (1969-2023)
In this hilarious novel, Harry Burton, a bachelor white-goods salesman, goes to take care of his sister Helen's two little boys for ten days while she and her husband are out of town. Helen says, "The children won't give you the slightest trouble; they're the best children in the world!" but, as you can imagine, Toddie and Budge are always up to something, and all sorts of comic mischief ensues. It just so happens that there's a lovely young lady in the neighborhood whom Harry admires very much, but she always seems to be passing by when he's deep in some terrible mess of the boys' making... What a fun romp!!! I'm a huge fan of Kara "Kay Ray" Shallenberg's reading, so I did a search for books she had read. That's how I discovered "Helen's Babies". It is an earlier version of.... Say Uncle Buck(?) just hilarious! And of course, when Kara reads, you can hear the laughter in her voice. Thankful for the 15-second reverse feature in Librivox because at points I was laughing so loudly that I missed bits. So fun! Kids would enjoy it too!

Everything the other reviews say is absolutely true! Only original points I can add are: 1) If you, like me, happen to have a boy or two in your family very prone to mischief amd mishaps, this book will help you reply with warmth and forgiveness! and 2)Kara has excellent choice in literature. When you have exhausted her librivox recordings, do check out her personal blog, kayray.org, where she has posted many non-public domain readings. She has introduced our family to so many gems, she feels like an old friend!

This is a delightful, entertaining story that was light in nature. The reader, K. Shallenberg, was excellent, consistently able to mimic the different voices, particular the children's. She read with just the right amount of feeling and drama to keep you enthralled.

Kara Shallenberg is an awesome narrator, and does a great job with this hilarious story. A bachelor jumps at the chance to babysit his nephews, as his sister and her husband enjoy
