The Dead Dog Café Comedy Hour is a fifteen-minute political and social satire radio series that revolves around Native people and their concerns. Set in Blossom, Alberta, the show features characters like Gracie Heavyhand, played by Edna Rain, and Jasper Friendlybear, portrayed by Floyd Favell, along with Thomas King playing himself. They gather at the Dead Dog Café to discuss the affairs of the world, often with humorous results.

The café, which originated in Tom King's novel Green Grass Running Water, offers a quirky menu filled with 'dead dog' items. The characters, while hosting their radio show, often find themselves in amusing situations, with Jasper dreaming of becoming a paparazzi photographer and Gracie being a pragmatic businesswoman who supports Jasper when it benefits her. The lively discussions at the café are always entertaining, and you never know who might drop in.

Biting funny Dead Dog Cafe ... brilliance!

(5 estrellas)

Devilishly funny, a powerful satire from an Indigenous viewpoint. Produced by the Canadian Broadcast Company (CBC) and created by the author Tom King who wrote the episodes and performs in them as the straight man who's the butt of many of the jokes. It sure pushes the envelope and challenges all sides with scathing, irreverent wit ... surprised a government funded radio broadcaster like CBC allowed it for three years (1997 to 2000), but they sure did something right here. It's light hearted and super fun, yet hard-hitting and fearlessly biting. A modern classic of radio.

Satire with warmth

Imaginative, painfully yet joyfully real, the Dead Dog Café Comedy Hour is both entertaining an thought provoking. CBC at its witty best ... and much missed.

Absolutely dear.
