The Old Curiosity Shop (version 2)

Written in the years 1840 to 1841, when Dickens was twenty-eight years old, this is a ‘Road’ tale in the very best tradition. Little Nell Trent and her Grandfather are the main characters, who secretly set off from their home under cover of night, to escape the wicked dwarf Quilp. Pursued across England, their adventures lead them through poverty stricken city areas where several destitute people offer them aid on their way, into the countryside where they meet the strange, colorful, and sometimes menacing characters for which Dickens is so well known. Grandfather’s mind begins to wander, and he leans even more for help on Nell, who herself is feeling ill and weak. Eventually they reach a safe pasture with a kind gentleman and think their troubles may be over, but heart-breaking tragedy strikes.

One in a MIL-lion

Dickens...yeh he's pretty good. He may make a name for himself. But Mil Nicholson...what an amazing ...reader isn't the right word...ACTRESS...that's it. Dickens stories are richly populated with countless characters. Mil gives each a unique voice, and a voice that fits the character. In rapid dialog when many are speaking, she shifts from one to the other seemingly effortlessly. And if a particular character disappears for 5 or 10 chapters, it's the same voice when they return. I have read all of Dickens works, but I am revisiting the ones that Mil has done. And if I accidentally start listening to another reader, it's like nails on a blackboard. Thank you Mil. Thank you.

Just finished 65 chapters of Nicholas Nickleby by the astonishing Ms. Nicholson and am back for more. She is beyond amazing in flawless narration which never hits a false note nor even a stumble. Does she direct herself as well? It seems impossible, but not for a towering talent like this. Thank you humbly for your volunteering of these wonderful productions!

Superbly read

quintessential Dickens. excellent road trip story with very well-defined characters. here you find heroes and villains, people Good and Evil, rich and poor alike. while this story certainly does not have a happy ending for the main protagonist, this one will live in my memory for a long time as one of Dickens best. Mill Nicholson is one of the best readers around. She gives a voice to each character and they carry through the entire book. well read and that makes every book she reads worth hearing.

when i heard the voice of this reader i knew i was in for a treat.im not finished this wonderful book yet... i just had to say how delighted i am with this recording...thank you so very much! red poppy

Interesting story with a great villain

(5 Sterne)

Mr. Dickens does such a wonderful job of creating interesting characters and painting superb word visions of an England now long past, but even in its golden age for short of meeting the needs of its working people. Nell and her grandfather are two of those characters and their wandering through early industrial Britain are brilliantly recorded. The reader also deserves multiple kudos for her excellent reading. Thank you, ma'am, and thank Libravox for providing this story.

Charles Dickens is a master at the English language, his exhaustive attention to detail and clever turns of phrase really make him one of my top three favorite authors of all time. Mil Nicholson is an excellent reader and I can’t imagine anybody doing a better job at this than her. Voices, accents and tones are consistent for each character throughout the entire book. She is as much a master of her art as Dickens is of his.

A very moving story which was wonderfully read as usual.

A very moving work with a more focused storyline than say Little Dorrit (which I also enjoyed). For me though, The Old Curiosity Shop was very gripping. It describes the life of a young girl and her grandfather as they run to escape oderous characters from the grandfather's past.

Absolute perfection!

I've never heard a better narration. Ms. Nicholson's voice is magic. Each character is so unique one forgets it's read by the same person! I'm in awe of her talent and so grateful to have come across it. Will be listening to more works narrated by her.
