CREDIT GOES TO DEARLEUK Classic Serial - Armadale Dramatisation by Robin Brooks of the 1866 mystery novel by Wilkie Collins. The machinations of the flame-haired temptress Lydia Gwilt are derailed by the workings of fate and her own lusts and longings. From The Radio Times It's hard to imagine the author of The Waste Land slipping a blockbuster into his beach bag, but of all Wilkie Collins's novels, this was TS Eliot's favourite. And it's easy to see why. Written between The Woman in White and The Moonstone, Armadale is a tale of poison and passion, secret pasts and concealed identities that follows the beautiful flame-haired Lydia Gwilt as she plots to ensnare the young heir to one of the finest houses in Norfolk, the good-hearted but light-headed Allan Armadale. Her intentions are strictly dishonourable: "There's only one man I care two straws about," she confides to her foster mother and partner in crime, Mrs Oldershaw. "He was laid in the grave many years ago under the name of Beethoven." Indeed, the Moonlight sonata provides the musical backdrop to the first episode of this three-parter, though one suspects the Appassionata would have been more to the taste of the fascinating Lydia Gwilt.  -- Laurence Joyce 1/3 By unexpectedly inheriting a substantial estate in Norfolk, callow Allan Armadale comes to the attention of the beautiful and dangerous fortune hunter Lydia Gwilt.
