A girl losing a stern but faithful housekeeper is bent on poisoning her doting, widowed fatherâs love-at-first-sight remarriage, no matter how patiently the new wife tries to handle the suddenly brattish teenâuntil her brief disappearance and a subsequent illness. Itâs a soapish and occasionally melodramatic variant on the ancient theme of âIf I canât have him, nobody can,â with more than a few hints at a prototype of The Bad Seed, but it does have a few good moments.
