Decent story - well read

As usual, Mark Nelson reads this story in a way to keep your attention. The story doesnt try too hard to impress the reader/listener with science, rather it focuses more on the humanity angle. Somewhat confusing at first, it all comes together nicely.
Doc Smith’s worst effort
Unknown
I have been a Doc Smith fan for well over a half a century. I have enjoyed his space operas over and over again during that time. This story is far and away the worst story of one of the Grand Masters of pulp sci-fi. It is not the marvelous narration by Mark Nelson that lets you down. The story has a good idea and potentially good characters. Sadly, it gets bogged down in tedious dialogue and generally poor writing. If Doc had spent half as much effort moving the story along with his usual clear technique seen in his others works as he does in sophomoric fixation on the sexual and romantic relationships of the scientists this would have been a much better story. As it is, unless you are a dyed in the wool Doc Smith super fan, I would suggest you skip listening to this one. I only give it 2 stars because of the narration by Mark Nelson. The story, if you read it, only deserves 1 star.
Good reading -- but
picfixer
Another excellent Mark Nelson reading, but the book is one of the lesser Smith/Evans colaborations. An earth interstellar expedition crew in which all the male scientists are young and ruggedly handsome and all the female scientists are young and gorgeously nubile leads to a plot that often gets bogged down in tedious romantic complications. The novel does offer interesting and unique elements for dedicated sci fi fans, but for the casual reader maybe not so much.
I read this about 30 years ago so I found it interesting to see what had kept me captivated 3 decades ago. EE Doc Smith a master of the Sci Fi Genre.
