The Secret Planet.
No human had ever landed on the hidden planet of Arisia. A mysterious space barrier turned back both men and ships. Then the word came to Earth, "Go to Arisia!", Virgil Samms of the Galactic Patrol went--and came back with the Lens, the strange device that gave its wearer powers no man had ever possessed before. Samms knew the price of that power would be high. But even he had no idea of the ultimate cost, and the weird destiny waiting for the First Lensman.

First Lensman is the sequel to Triplanetary, and the second book of E.E. "Doc" Smith's classic Lensman series. (from the original book cover and Mark Nelson) (11 hr 11 min)

Mark Nelson is such a talent. And I love the old scifi stories too. I challenge any reader to not give this a 5/5. It's simply not right to bag something you got for free!

Brilliant book, brought back memories of my teenage years when I first discovered EE Doc Smith!

This is the second of the Triplanetary series of books. If you liked that you’ll love this. The flow of the story is good, we don’t get that weird “two chapters of characters just talking pseudo science” which fills some of his other work, this is all action! There are some delightful little flourishes which are common to this author and it all comes together to make a fun story with plenty going on. The reading is as impeccable as you would imagine from this reader.

I read a lot of SF in college, including most of e.e.'s, which were relaxing and a great change from the pedantic classroom work. 60 years later I added his stories to my listening library. when I finished the story I realized he must have been psychic. He brought us to our current political situation in 8/2023 as if he could have visualized it. Listen to the book and decide if we are close. He had his solution. I look forward to our solution. djb

This is a real classic space opera and read so perfectly by the great Mark Nelson. There is such depth in the story line and I just loved the turn of phrases used by the characters...real old-school
