Off on a Comet

Read by LibriVox Volunteers

(4.3 stars; 68 reviews)

The story starts with a comet that touches the Earth in its flight and collects a few small chunks of it. Some forty people of various nations and ages are condemned to a two-year-long journey on the comet. They form a mini-society and cope with the hostile environment of the comet (mostly the cold). The size of the 'comet' is about 2300 kilometers in diameter - far larger than any comet or asteroid that actually exists. (Summary by Wikipedia) (11 hr 11 min)

Bravo!

Great tale from a greater author

Loved it!!

Once you get past the fact that this could never happen it is an amazing book!! I love how most Jules Verne's books invoke your imagination. Also the readers did an amazing job!! Especially Kirby Bonds and Esther.

Every vile antisemetic stereotype!

(2 stars)

I generally enjoyed this tale despite the unbelievable premise. That's often the fun of Sci Fi. However, the "bad guy" in the story is a Jewish merchant, and short of accusing him of killing gentile babies and using their blood to make Passover matzoh, he uses every vile antisemetic stereotype in describing him. Yes, I know, literature needs to be looked at through the lens of the times in which it was written, but this is really too much.

ANOTHER UNIQUE ADVENTURE

Verne produces another sci-fi scenario which stands alone. The ending is blah, but the story is intetesting, if not compelling.

Very well read, thanks. I am so amazed at the genius of Vern.

Jules Verne!

Nothing like a great classic delivered by the superb readers.

Another amazing story by Jules Verne!!

Getting kinda' hard to listen to the characterazations of the "niggers" and the "dirty Jews " but I do realize when it was written and I guess that was par for the course. But the premise is interesting...
