The Gaming Gang October Spooktacular 2021 - The Witch's Tale: The Hairy Thing (1932)
Jeff McAleer
The Witch's Tale, the first horror radio drama, began airing from WOR in New York City in 1931 and ran for seven years. Each episode was hosted by a Salem witch named "Old Nancy" and her black cat, Satan. Although the series is fondly remembered, very few recordings exist today due to the creator Alonzo Deen Cole destroying his collection in 1961.
This particular tale, "The Hairy Thing," focuses on a young nurse named Barbara Turner who inherits a house from a woman who may have been a witch. However, there's a catch: Barbara must spend every night in a specific bedroom of the house for an entire year to claim her inheritance. While some of the dialogue may come off as unintentionally humorous, the story delivers a captivating payoff.
So turn out the lights and enjoy this eerie tale as it aired on September 26th, 1932.
This recording is part of the Old Time Radio collection.
