Well, hey there, and welcome to Fenway Park for this all-time, one-game playoff against the New York Yankees! The sun is shining, and it's about 70 degrees out. Perfect weather for a ballgame today! We have a five mile per hour wind blowing out toward center, beneficial to the hitters, but unlikely to make any real difference here. As for the lineups, here's the Red Sox order: we have Johnny Pesky leading off at shortstop, with his high OBP and reliable glove. Batting second is Dustin Pedroia at second base, he's a splendid fielder with a strong bat, he's quite the line drive hitter. We've got the great Ted Williams batting third in left, Red Sox home runs leader, and quite the average hitter too, of course, last man to bat .400 with his .406 average back in 1941! At first is Jimmie Foxx, batting cleanup here. He also has tremendous power. Batting fifth is David Ortiz, the Designated Hitter for the Sox, with great power, not so much speed however. In center field it'll be Tris Speaker, and boy can he play shallow. Speaker's one of the fastest and best fielding center fielders in baseball history! Over at third base we've got Jimmy Collins, he has a sparkling glove and a .300 bat. Way out in right is Jim Rice, he's got quite some power, and not a bad fielder at all! In the catchers spot there is Carlton Fisk, great arm with a good bat to boot. Starting the game for the Sox is the great Cy Young, owner of some 500 wins, the most in baseball history! Managing the Red Sox it'll be Alex Cora. And for the visiting Yanks, leading off we have Mantle in the outfield, second is going to be Gehrig playing first of course, great power and an iron bat, not to mention his glove! Third is the immortal Babe Ruth also in the outfield, at right, arguably the best hitter to ever play this game of baseball, one-time home run king, and one of the highest lifetime averages in the game of baseball! We have Joe DiMaggio with his great bat, he'll be completing this deadly outfield, and what an outfield it is! Playing short, it'll be the controversial Alex Rodriguez, steroids are a possibility, but even without he was a great player, as well as a defender. Batting sixth is gonna be Reggie Jackson, playing DH for the Yanks, a great home run hitter but not much else. Batting seventh they've got Bill Dickey behind the plate, a solid defender, a very good hitter, he has an uncanny power to know just where to pitch to batters! Eighth in the Yanks order is gonna be John "Home Run" Baker playing third base here. Not actually much of a power hitter, but then again he did play in the Dead Ball Era. Lazzeri batting last and playing with his great glove at second base. And Jack Chesbro will be starting on the mound for the Yanks, he is the only modern-day pitcher with a 40-win season! Managing the Yankees, of course, will be the great Casey Stengel! We'll begin this historic game soon, Cy Young is nearly done warming up here at Fenway! In the meantime, we have an announcement: remember to stay in your seats! If you are found in a seat that is not yours, you will be taken out of the game, and hey, who wants to be taken out of this great game? Young is all warmed up now, he's heading to the mound, and the crowd is giving him a standing ovation, even the Yankees fans. You simply have to respect he who is the winningest pitcher in baseball, folks! The Red Sox are dashing on to the field now, and just listen to that crowd! They're cheering on their all-time favorites, players they never thought they'd see again, or HAVE never seen in the first place! Williams in particular is getting a lot of cheers, and I'd say he deserves it! Mantle stepping up to the batters box here, Yankees fans are cheering for him heartily. Young ready as Mantle gets in the box. Young winds up. The pitch! Mantle takes a fastball just on the inside edge here, that'll be strike one, and the crowd goes wild with the first pitch this afternoon, an afternoon I never through I'd see! Fisk tosses the ball back to the great Cy Young... Mantle ready, Young waits, and he delivers! ...Curveball, little low. Good take there by Mantle. Fisk pounds his glove, tosses to Young... Mantle looks like he's planning to smash this ball over the Monster here! The pitch...! Swing and a miss, on an outside fastball there! Young showing off his speed there, Mantle looks a bit overpowered, I'd have to say... Young ready, the windup, the pitch... FOULED back, off the screen. Mantle just barely caught up with another Young fastball there. Fisk is going to visit the mound now, have a little talk with Young. Maybe there was a sign mixup there, maybe he's just talking strategy... whatever it is, Fisk is heading back to the plate now. Young loosens his arm up a little, swinging it around. Fisk gets to his catchers spot again, Mantle steps back in the box, and he'll wait for the pitch, now. And Young BLAZES a heater by him, that'll strike him out! Will you listen to that crowd, they're cheering their hearts out here! Lineup doesn't relent now, as Lou Gehrig steps up to the plate. We're hearing lots of cheers even from the Sox fans, and Gehrig certainly deserves them! Gehrig gets in the box, taps his bat on the plate, and waits... here's the pitch...! That's a good curveball low and away, got Gehrig to chase there. Gehrig looks a bit disappointed in himself after that swing, and it did NOT look pretty! Fisk gets the ball back to Young, and Young'll waste no time as he delivers... ball one, little TOO high with the high cheese is Young. Good take there by the Iron Horse. Cy Young gets the ball, the windup, and the pitch...! Hammered into deep right field! Rice back... back... at the track... and he makes the catch just in front of the right field wall! Gehrig really hammered that one! About 350 feet there, according to Statcast. And the crowd completely loses it as Babe Ruth steps up to home plate. Ruth, very very possibly the best hitter in baseball history. He tips his cap to the crowd, and wow, does that get some cheers! ...He steps in the box now, gets ready. Young with the windup, here it comes: Ball one, fastball little inside and low. Fisk gets it to Young, and Ruth grins a little, he's happy to finally be able to play again. After all, it's been nearly ninety years! Young is ready now. He throws...! Curveball just away, called by Klem behind the plate there. Crowd oohs, but it did look to be an inch or two off the plate, so credit to Klem for that tough call! Here's the windup, and Young delivers now! Ruth takes a mighty cut at a high fastball, that'll be strike one. The Babe looking to power that one maybe 600 feet by the looks of that swing! But then again, all of Babe's swings look like that... Young ready, here's the throw. Ball three, juuuust low with a changeup, or at least that's what they call it. Looked not a lot like the traditional change of pace. Anyway, here comes the three-one pitch to the immortal baseball great, from another immortal baseball great...! That's strike two called! Fastball right down the pipe there, and boy, I bet Ruth wants to see that one again! I know I certainly would, and in fact I'm surprised Ruth was taking with a three-and-one count. Well, it's full now, 3-2, and here's the payoff pitch: He walked him!! Crowd with mixed cheers and boos here, as Young threw a fastball just off the plate with a full count there. Joe DiMaggio up to the plate now, runner on first. A double might score Ruth here with two outs, as Ruth'll be going with the crack of the bat. Young steps off the mound, walks around a bit. He picks up the rosin bag now, runs it through his fingers. He puts it down, steps back on the rubber, and here it comes: strike one to DiMaggio! Great pitch there, it was a curve just on the inside part of the plate at the knees, that's a pitch that'll certainly tie even some of the best hitters up, as was just proved! Young ready now, the oh-one... STRIKE TWO called, as DiMaggio takes one on the outside part of the plate, looked to be a fastball that time. Fisk tosses it back to Young, and Young gets on the rubber. He's ready. The windup. The pitch! DiMaggio hammers that one on the ground to Collin
