A Master of Mysteries
L. T. Meade
Read by J. M. Smallheer
"It so happened that the circumstances of fate allowed me to follow my own bent in the choice of a profession. From my earliest youth the weird, the mysterious had an irresistible fascination for me. Having private means, I resolved to follow my unique inclinations, and I am now well known to all my friends as a professional exposer of ghosts, and one who can clear away the mysteries of most haunted houses....I propose in these pages to relate the histories of certain queer events, enveloped at first in mystery, and apparently dark with portent, but, nevertheless, when grappled with in the true spirit of science, capable of explanation." - from the Introduction to "A Master of Mysteries" (4 hr 17 min)

jill's wasted life
I'm a big fan of the librivox mystery and crime division since i've been going through some health problems. listening to books has been a big help to occupy my mind. that being said, my favorite READER is the lovely Ms Smallheer who is soothing and engaging in her interpretation. She is my favorite. I am so glad to find another set of mystery stories from Librivox narrated aloud by the mysterious herself Ms Smallheer. So grateful for what it means for the nights I cannot sleep from the pain and while I walk around my house or do some yoga to help myself physically I get to listen to these great stories provided by Librivox. THIS MYSTERY BOOK is a compellation of stories and just delightful. Thank you so much to Librivox and to Ms Smallheer and to all the readers of this community. You don't know whose lives you are touching..
Good stories

These stories involve a man who investigates what seem to be supernatural mysteries. The language is a bit stagey to modern ears, but if you're familiar with the genre, you'll enjoy it. The characters speak in an exaggerated formallity that makes them all sound literary rather than conversational. Personally, I find it to be part of the charm. The stories themselves kept me engaged, and the reader was satisfactory. Not professional, but this is Librivox, so what do you expect. At least it isn't one of those English as a second language people. A English Victorian story told be a person with a Norwegian accent just doesn't work for me.

Short, interesting tales of queer happenings & mysteries solved by a man of brilliant common sense. Enjoyable.
Spooky.

Spooky stories of mystery and adventure read by a terrific narrator. If you like cheesy Hammer horror movies, you might like this book. The reader does exceptionally well, interpreting character's voices. It's easy to take granted how good she is because you get so lost in the story, you forget it's some some lady reading. This is the second time I listened to this and while this is one of my favorite readers, this time I noticed how good she really is.

I really enjoy this narrator. Well read and pleasing to listen to, she gives life to the stories.

I thoroughly enjoyed these adventures of Mr Bell and am looking forward to hearing more stories read by this wonderful reader. I am pretty new to Librivox and delighted at the prospect of exploring further this amazing resource. Well done to the writer Meade, to Ms Smallheer the reader and to Librivox. Happy days!
Very satisfying, especially for bibliophiles.

the wonderful Ms Smallheer is a gateway to so many excellent books. follow her, you'll not stray far from a good story. as for this one, I was gripped but the love interest is not developed well and it sounds a dull note.

I listened to these for a second time and thoroughly enjoyed them since I had forgotten most of the details of the stories. Also thank you to J. M. Smallheer, a very favorite reader.
