Discovering the Middle Way: Nagarjuna's Fundamental Wisdom
Don Handrick
Nagarjuna, the great Indian Buddhist philosopher who lived around the second century, composed The Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way, considered one of the most influential and important texts in the Mahayana tradition. In this text, Nagarjuna expounded upon the Middle Way view as taught by the Buddha in the Perfection of Wisdom Sutras, which clearly articulates the ultimate nature of all phenomena which, when realized most deeply, becomes the cause for liberation from the cycle of suffering (samsara) and the attainment of true peace (nirvana). Following the tradition of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, in this course we will examine three essential chapters of this text, utilizing commentary from Ocean of Reasoning by the great Tibetan scholar Je Tsongkhapa, in order to inform our correct understanding of the Middle Way view of the nature of reality.
