(4.5 stars; 58 reviews)

This 1922 novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald chronicles the life of Anthony Patch, the only heir of millionaire Adam Patch, his grandfather. Anthony is young, handsome and well-educated. He marries the ravishingly beautiful Gloria, and together they plan for the day that Anthony receives his inheritance. But what will they make of themselves in the meantime as they look forward to a life of wealth and idle leisure? What is the role of purpose in a well-lived life? Fitzgerald explores these questions in a book that is at the same time humorous, sad and tragic. (Mark Nelson) (14 hr 15 min)

Reviews

It’s F. Scott Fitzgerald!

(5 stars)

The story is somewhat autobiographical and mirrors the pain experienced by Fitzgerald in his life. It has frequent humor and lighthearted moments but doesn’t end well. As with all his stories it pulls one in and doesn’t let go until the very end.

It’s FSF, so...

If you love FSF’s style then you will really appreciate this narrator’s rendition . Another great offering by Mark Nelson. FSF was, shall we say, a pessimistic living a cynical life of Jazz Age privilege intertwined with WWI service. Worth listening to with no surprise ending.

Lovely book about not so lovely people

(4 stars)

I enjoy this book, but would not it read it again, due to finding the listless, "tomorrow" attitude of the characters frequently frustrating. This however is a testament to to impressive writing. I also enjoyed the style of reading especially now I have found how to speed it up on LibriVox (I personally get very impatient when readers are going slower). I really enjoyed the way Fitzgerald makes these scenes which could be so sad seem so everyday, though this could be because of the reflection of his life in his work. Over all I would recommend this book especially to fans of P. G Wodehouse who are looking for something a little darkher. I believe this reader also has done some Wodehousex.

such interesting characters!

(5 stars)

this book deals with the inner workings of their minds and leaves you with a slightly bitter memory of them when it has ended.

A Tale of Addiction and it's aftermath.

(5 stars)

Heart breaking tale of over indulgence and a sense of entitlement. Narrator is awesome.

The book is good, but the reader was unbearable (Mark Smith.). I appreciate that he volunteered to read this book, but he has no talent for it whatsoever. Awful reading.
