The Coal Hole

(4.1 stars; 205 reviews)

Following more than twenty years of conflict, a pair of brothers come to terms, putting aside the troubles of their past, and both families jump at the chance to spend the summer together in the mountains of Pennsylvania. At first glance all seems pleasant and benign, but there are secrets lurking about the small town, talk of foul cults and human sacrifice. The locals largely consider this nonsense, even with a handful of disappearances over the years and several unexplained deaths. Yet, there are those who believe, individuals who are prepared to do whatever it takes to rid their home of this darkness, an evil that is more ancient and powerful than they imagine.

the back story could've gone a little deeper about the cults and gods. the old book was mentioned many times but didn't connect enough with the ongoing story. all in all, the reading was nice and the story development kept me listening.

gave up

(2 stars)

I listened for about half an hour and then got bored waiting for the story to grip me. It is not helped by the authors delivery, which is done with a kind of singsong voice. It might be that the story gets really good after a while, but having already lost interest I couldn’t be bothered.

(2.5 stars)

The plot was good but not great, at least one of the characters was amazingly stupid and very irritating. The narrator's voice was clear but did not convey any drama or suspense which made the novel less intense than it should have been.

Stephen King fans will probably like it.

(3 stars)

Lots of buildup for very little payoff or explanation. Sounds like it's read by the Suzie character. Mundane ending.

Good story, well read

(4 stars)

Although the story started off slow, it quickly grabbed my attention and kept it. Very well written and very well read.

Good book but room for improvement

(3 stars)

Needs to developer charecters more, so that you can know what motivates them. But very enjoyable overall

(4 stars)

good story, very intriguing but should have been read by someone other than author.

This narrated novel was a nice surprise. It's a good story that's easy to follow. You also have a nice and clear voice. The listen book was on my I-phone so I could take it with me while I was driving, shopping and so on. I liked it so much ...
