"Watch out for the Hidden Things..."
That's the last thing Calliope Jenkin's best friend and former lover says to her before ending a 2 A.M. phone call from Iowa, where he's investigating a case she knows little about. Five hours later, she gets another call, this time from the police. Josh has been found dead; foul play is suspected. Calliope is stunned.
Especially when Josh leaves a message on her phone a few hours later.
Spurred by grief and suspicion, she heads to Iowa herself, accompanied by a road-weary stranger who claims to know something about what happened to Josh and who can - maybe - help Calli get him back.
The road is not quite the straight shot she imagined. Josh was involved in something a lot more complicated than a teenage runaway or deadbeat dad, and Calliope find herself on a surreal road trip into - and behind - America's heartland, hounded by once-magical creatures twisted by living too long just out of sight and the bogeymen in Calliope's own troubled past.

Reviews
I think I'll listen to it again; it's that good!
Steven Rodgers
Like all good stories we want it to never end but as all good writers know: "Always leave them wanting more". It would make a good movie or series would be better; in cartoon or CGI format, maybe. Very good recording though.
Slow
very slow...
I was 8 chapters in, and the slowness of this story was too much, yes the characters are veeery weeelllll developed, so much so that the atual story, the mystery (you know these actual reason why we would want to listwn) suffers considerably. I hated the conversation between individuals in which they knew what they were talking about, but the listener didn't have a clue, it didn't build suspense or intrigue because it was being stretched out far too much - I mean do we need to have flash backs to the'band' breaking up!
Glad that I found this Hidden Thing

I'm really struggling to describe this podcast or why I enjoyed the serial so much. It was just good, damn good. I can't find the artful and thoughtful words right now so let's settle for really damn good. I really enjoyed the streamlined narration and the production quality. so many serial sci-fi podcasts have soundscapes littered with bad foley effects or other such cutesy accents. even when I was half listening while doing something else the story plucked at me and pulled me in.

Wow, what a great book! I’m off in hunt of other Douce Testerman books, I really hope I find some. This is a truly awesome book, complex with well developed characters, who you like & dislike, have hopes for etc. Every thread is followed & loose ends tied up, surprising ending. You will not regret reading or listening to this book. Enjoy
Good fractal universe read

Testerman does a good job of starting a world that intertwines the human world and a world that could exist outside of what is known. The lead character seems a little too angry, but for the genre, that attitude does a good job of moving the story along. This would be a great start to a series.

A truly amazing story! I don't often give reviews, normally I just give a rating and that's it but this story deserves more. It's bemusing and uplifting, the characters are full and beautifully voiced. I listened to the entire book over two days, couldn't stop listening. An excellent story with excellent narration. Thank you very much.

Very enjoyable listen. The narration is easy to listen to and the story is very well done. One of the better podiobooks I have listened to. No over the top sex or violence, the story is good enough that it doesn't need that for the shock value. I hope this ...

This was wonderful! I often start podcasts a little tentatively and sometimes give up not far in if it isn't gripping enough but the opening chapter of this one had me hooked right away! The story starts out like a quirky detective novel but ends up being so original and ...
